Grievance Samples & Exemplars

  

This page contains sample grievances (to the right) and grievance exemplars (scroll down below).  Please note that the current collective bargaining agreement (CBA, or "Master Agreement") went into effect on July 20, 2009, so exemplars from prior to that may have citations to the old CBA that are no longer in effect, or may be erroneous.  The negotiated grievance procedure is found in Article 20 of the CBA.  Guidance on how to file grievances is in Chapter 9 of the NFFE Local 1998 Steward Manual. 

Only a NFFE Local 1998 Union Representative can use the Union letterhead and the Union sample grievances to the right.  Employees may seek the assistance of a Union Rep in filing a grievance (in which case the Union Rep would use the samples for reps) or may file a grievance by him/herself (using the employee samples).  Step 2 Grievances are filed by the nationwide Union representatives (President, Vice President, Secretary-Treasurer, Recording Secretary, and Chief Steward). 

A grievance can be filed over a violation of law, rule, or regulation.  A violation of the CBA is the most common allegation made in a grievance, but a grievance can also be filed over a violation of a locally negotiated agreement, or settlement agreements, or memorandums of understanding signed by the Union and Management.
